When cooking outdoors, my family relies on a gas grill.
(No judgments, please!) Cleaning and prepping the grill was always the most challenging
part of grill cooking until I discovered Grill Wipes. Produced by , Grate Chef, a company that develops
products for the backyard griller, Grill Wipes clean and oil your grill without
any mess. Really.

Grill Wipe pads look like sliced cheese |
That means no oily, charcoal-coated rags or grill fires
from attempting to grease the grates with a spray-on substance; Grill Wipes
eliminate the debris.
Made mostly from a blend of hydrogenated vegetable oils
(widely considered unhealthful to humans), Grill Wipes are small pads that
attach to the bristles of any grill brush. Solid hydrogenated oils are darn
useful in this, non-edible application. The solid state of the oil prevents the
oil from melting down through the grates and, since the heat is low when
applying, the oil adheres easily to the cooking surface and does not burn off
when the heat is raised.
My family has now road tested two packages of six wipes
each and the results have been uniformly good. Seared eggplant? Lifted easily
from each side’s three minutes on the grill. Turkey burgers? Although the chef
burned these a bit, they, too, lifted off with little resistance. The best
result was an experiment with salmon teriyaki. Given two minutes on the grill,
flesh side down, before hoisted whole (with a fish spatula) into a cast iron
pan, there was no fish flesh left on the grill.
You must, however, follow the package instructions to
wipe the grill with the Wipes when the grill is heating up. Wiping once the grill
is hot negates their effectiveness.
