I Heart Keenwah bite-size (quinoa) snacks

My instant hot quinoa cereal business is 4 years gone, but I am always excited to see new quinoa products arrive on the market, especially ready-to-eat quinoa. I Heart Keenwah, a quinoa snack company, began selling their wares in 2011.

Available in 4 certified gluten free flavors; Cranberry Cashew, Almond, Chocolate Sea Salt and Ginger Peanut, they are sold in 4 ounce packages at $4.99 per pack (retail). That comes in at $1.25 per ounce but you get quite a bang for your buck+. Bite-sized and full-flavored, each quinoa cluster is made with organic  Bolivian quinoa (natch), its quinoa in three forms, whole, flaked and crisped. The variations in how the quinoa is processed, along with the added nuts, make for great texture, no matter which flavor.

Cranberry Cashew had a firm crunch and a sweet piquancy, the slightly bitter flavor of the quinoa pumped up by the cranberries natural tang. The cashews add a suave creaminess.

Almond had a bit of a softer chew and a smooth sweetness. Made without fruit, the salt is more noticeable in the Almond flavor than in the Cranberry Cashew but it’s a pleasant, not overwhelming saltiness that serves as a foil for the sugar.

Unlike some other quinoa products, the dietary fiber in this snack is low at under 1 gram per ounce but the protein gets a boost from each flavor’s added nuts and comes in at 2 to 3 grams per ounce.  Three types of sweetener – honey, cane syrup and tapioca syrup - push the sugars to 7 to 9 grams per ounce or about the same as an energy bar.

Would I buy these again?  You betchya. I Heart Keenwah’s snacks are an ideal salty-sweet snack.
